What is alkaline water?
You may remember from chemistry class that elements can be acidic or basic. The respective value is determined by the pH scale, which starts from 0 and goes to 14. Things that are acidic have a low pH and things that are alkaline have a high pH. Therefore, alkaline water has a high pH compared to other types of water. Here’s a helpful comparison:
- Tap water pH: Ranges between 4-5
- Pure/distilled water pH: Ranges between 5-6
- Springwater pH: Ranges between 7-8
- Alkaline water pH: Ranges between 8-9
Many reports claim that Drinking Alkaline water can lower the acidity in the body. High acidity is an indicator of poor health. However, this thing should be noted that drinking Alkaline water does not alter blood pH
What are the benefits of drinking alkaline water?
Drinking Alkaline regularly has various health benefits including:

Does alkaline water have side effects?
Almost every research concluded that alkaline water is safe to drink. There are a few side effects that you should note.
- Alkaline water may change the acid in your stomach. Since acid is necessary for proper digestion. Hence, medical professionals suggest that you avoid drinking alkaline water with meals.
- When starting with any regime, it’s suggested that you start with less intake and then gradually increase it.
How much alkaline water should I drink every day?
A lot of doctors recommend it is highly beneficial to drink at least 8 glasses of water every day. In case you are not used to drinking a lot of water, begin by drinking 3-4 glasses of alkaline water per day (i.e approx. 1 litre) and gradually increase your water intake to 8-12 glasses per day (i.e approx 2 to 3 litres).
Should I drink alkaline water with meals?
Various experts believe that one should avoid drinking Alkaline water with meals. One should make sure that water intake must be 30 minutes before and up to 1.5 – 2 hours after meals. Since our stomach needs to be acidic to digest the food we eat and drinking alkaline water with meals will definitely slow down the digestion process.
When is the best time to drink alkaline water?
For starters, have your first glass of the day right when you get out of bed. The water absorbs best into the system when your stomach is empty. Afterwards, you should continue to drink alkaline water throughout the day. But, remember not to drink ionized water 30 minutes before and up to 2 hours after meals and medication.
Does alkaline water taste different?
Definitely, yes, but it isn’t some kind of juice, that will taste bitter. The water entering the Alkaline first goes through a filter that removes the taste and odour of the chlorine found in municipal tap water. The electrolysis then breaks down the size of the molecules in water clusters into micro clusters. This makes the water taste softer. and silkier. Alkaline water tastes great and makes coffee, tea and juices taste better. It’s also great for cooking, as it helps moisturize food and bring out its flavor.
